Work Experience at Toyota Logistics

Toyota Logistics Centre Great Britain (TLSGB) has been in Lutterworth since 1991. This year they have taken on their first work experience student placement in the office environment.

One of them was Ed Reynolds, a year 12 student.

Ed was given a project, supervised by Carl Briggs, …, to analyse their Mechanical Handling Equipment (on the picture; one of the BOSS trucks) and provide the team with the costs per truck, using the available data.

“This project has been a massive success for both the site and also from the local colleges point of view”, says Carl.  “Over the weeks he was here I gave Ed project definition and an induction to the Toyota Way, Kaizen Planning, Business process mapping (BPM),  all of which he used within the project he was given.  Although Ed was extremely quiet and reserved when he started, he developed and became a confident and helpful team member.”

One of the many positive remarks Carl and his colleagues received from his tutor:

“I spoke to his Dad last night and he tells me that Ed has been very vocal, telling them everything he’s been doing after his work days.

It’s super not only from a work experience perspective but also as this is boosting his confidence no end, thank you!”

Once Ed had finished this project he presented it to numerous people on site ranging from the Depot manager to office staff. He then took this presentation away and presented at school to the teaching staff. Ed’s database that was created is still used now to understand the cost of trucks to our site not just locally but to also report out to TME

“During my work placement I enjoyed all the work that I had been set, and all the staff were really friendly, and would help me if there was anything that I was struggling with.”, said Ed.

“We now have a second student Rob (on the main picture, together with Carl Briggs) who is also assisting on site with numerous projects,” says Carl, “again I followed a similar induction giving Rob a good background knowledge of Toyota Way, Kaizen, BPM’s, PDCA, etc. It’s our DNA and the skills learnt are transferable to whatever these students want to do in the future, again with Rob we have had some great feedback from his Tutor.”

“I just wanted to say how animated Rob has been since he started work experience with you”, said … – he’s normally a quiet, reserved student but he’s happy to chat away about Toyota, the methodology and the people he’s met working there so far – you’ve definitely unlocked something in him!!”
